Everyone at Imagine Fantastic Film Festival is mad about genre (right?). For our new interview series Faces of Imagine, our special guests, crew members and volunteers tell us all about the fantastic fiction they love.
Next up: Festival Director Chris Oosterom, the one and only.
Hi Chris! When did you start at Imagine?
‘I started in November 2012!’
What was your Imagine 2024 highlight?
‘Last Friday night, when all the people in LAB1 went berserk after Phil Tippett’s Career Talk.’
What’s your Staff Pick for this year?
‘Probably the French body horror film Else. I’m looking forward to seeing happy people and people who are surprised, positively or negatively, by what they’ve seen at the festival.’
Why do you love fantastic fiction?
‘I love it because it lifts me from everyday life.’
What’s your favourite genre?
‘I like time travel science fiction, because it’s always impossible and often silly.’
What’s your favourite scary movie?
‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It’s still scary after all those years, and it’s still brilliant from start to finish.’
What’s your favourite movie character?
‘Leatherface. He never stops scaring you.’
In which fantasy world would you like to live?
‘I’d like to live in Oz, because it’s silly, colourful and old-fashioned. I’d love to meet those goofy characters in real life.’
What’s your favourite fantastic film scene?
‘Probably the final fight scene from Peter Jackson’s Braindead, when the main character is up to his ankles in cut-off limbs and blood.’
And what’s your favourite genre film quote?
‘From the same film, Braindead: ‘I kick ass for the Lord!”
