Everyone at Imagine Fantastic Film Festival is mad about genre (right?). For our new interview series Faces of Imagine, our special guests, crew members and volunteers tell us all about the fantastic fiction they love.
Next up: Imagine volunteer Sara, who is helping out at the VR exhibition in Galerie Beeldend Gesproken.
Hi Sara! What do you like about volunteering at Imagine?
‘This is my second year. I like it because you get to do a lot of different things. Here at the VR exhibition you get to see how people from different generations react to the Virtual Reality, and it’s a great opportunity to try the experiences myself. I also love watching movies that I maybe wouldn’t watch on my own.’
Why do you love fantastic fiction?
‘Because it allows you enter different worlds you wouldn’t explore otherwise, and it can be an interesting exercise to imagine what your life would be in one of those worlds.’
What was your Imagine 2024 highlight?
‘My highlight was one of the VR experiences, Sen. It’s a Japanese experience where you hold a cup and see the ghost that lives in it. The ghost takes you on a journey. You can move the cup and really feel its texture, while the ghost takes you into all these different worlds.’
What’s your favourite genre?
‘Science fiction movies!’
What’s your favourite scary movie?
‘My favourite scary movie is Midsommar. I don’t do well with jump scares (which is also what the festival is helping me with, pushing the limits of what I do and don’t enjoy watching), but I really liked this film because the horror comes from what you actually see.’
In which fantasy world would you like to live?
‘I would like to live in the world of last year’s opening film, The Boy and the Heron. Miyazaki’s landscapes are just always so beautiful, with their colours, and the animals and creatures. It would be nice to live with them.’
What’s your favourite movie character?
‘My favourite character is also from a Miyazaki film, Kiki’s Delivery Service. Kiki can fly around and do whatever she wants.’
What is your favourite Imagine memory?
‘The volunteer party we had last year, celebrating the festival and our passion for movies together.’
