Breathtaking and multifaceted anime in which a teenager fights to save a wounded vampire.
A fellow student tells lonely teenager Koyomi about a female vampire roaming the town. That night, Koyomi follows a trail of blood leading to an empty station, where he meets the vampire, who is missing her arms and legs. She makes Koyomi an offer: he can save her life.
The Monogatari franchise consists of mangas and a trilogy of films that came out in 2016 and 2017. Kizumonogatari – Koyomi Vamp is a prequel, but easy to follow even if you’re unfamiliar with its narrative universe. Director Tatsuya Oishi switches between contemplative scenes in empty streets and furious, spectacular action sequences. The characters, from the vampires to the heavily armed enemies Koyomi is pitted against, are all equally memorable. In between all the visual (and erotic) fireworks, Oishi proves to be a disciplined storyteller, interweaving several complex plotlines and breathtaking animation.
