Unique and poetic animation inspired by Chinese cultural history, from its artwork to its fantastic mythology.
In a world where objects have souls, an umbrella and a sword are transformed into fairies Qingdai and Wanggui. When Wanggui (the Black Jade Sword fairy) escapes from the royal pavilion hungry for revenge, Quingdai starts the search, joined by young craftsman Mo Yang.
This Chinese animated film was based on the manhua of the same name by Wei Ying and Zuo Xiaoling. The characters strongly resemble those from traditional Japanese anime, but The Umbrella Fairy focuses on Chinese mythology and Chinese aristocratic traditions. The beautiful design, inspired by Chinese paintings, opera, musical instruments and artworks, emphasises the culture in which the story is set. The film also mixes traditional Chinese painting techniques with digital animation, making for a one-of-a-kind, poetic fairy tale.
