Cleaner Sayara – originally from Turkmenistan – works in a fitness center owned by Barış, who is having a torrid affair with Sayara’s sister, Yonca. When Barış and his friends kill Yonca in an assault meant to frighten her, Saraya’s true nature will be revealed to all.
Turkish director Can Evrenol (Baskin) returns to the big screen with this subversion of rape-revenge movies, an anti-revenge tale in which the main evil is patriarchy pervading modern society despite efforts to progress. Whether it’s Barış and his macho friends or Saỷara’s brutal father who imbues his daughter’s soul with the very nature of violence, every character within this unrelenting thriller is controlled by a force they can’t even begin to understand. Channeling the nihilism of Korean revenge movies, Sayara is an ugly, soul-searing experience only for those who embrace cinematic extremes. You’ve been warned.
