Aaaaaa, just one more month till opening night! And don’t worry, we’re not going to leave you hanging in the meantime. Plenty of good genre stuff to see in cinemas and online over the next few weeks. These are our favourites. (And we’ll see you in Amsterdam during the festival!)

Imagine On Tour
18 – 20 October in KINO and Forum

Before Imagine kicks off, we’re touring the country with a curated selection of titles from our programme in KINO (Rotterdam) and Forum (Groningen). KINO is screening three films (A Different Man, Mad God and Ghost Killer), Forum is showing five (A Different Man, Mad God, Phil Tippett: Mad Dreams and Monsters, 1984 and Your Monster). More info can be found on our On Tour page.

The Substance
In cinemas from 19 September

Coralie Forgeat (Revenge) is back with the craziest, bloodiest, funniest, body horror thrill ride of the year, that alternately thrilled / disgusted audience at Cannes this year. Actress Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) has become too old for Hollywood and decides to create a new, younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley). Needless to say her forever-young-experiment has horrible consequences. Not for the faint of heart!

Handling the Undead
In cinemas from 26 September

Moody slow horror in this Norwegian zombie film, which sees the recently deceased partners of people in Oslo rise from the dead after an electrical storm. The living have a hard time adapting to this new reality. Starring Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie, who also acted together in The Worst Person in the World.

Strange Darling
In cinemas from 26 September

Director JT Mollner knows his stuff and shows it in this crisp 35mm throwback thriller referencing The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and grindhouse. A toxic one night stand turns into a wild murder chase, but who’s the big bad wolf and who’s the little lamb? Filmed by actor-turned-cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi!

Joker 2: Folie à deux
In cinemas from 3 October

Part two of Todd Phillips’ Joker saga, which sees Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) imprisoned in Arkham waiting to be tried. All seems not very jolly until doctor / fellow looney Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) walks into his cell. Oh boy.

Uzumaki
Streaming on Crunchyroll from 28 september

Finally! The long-awaited anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga, already adapted to video games and the 2000 Higuchinsky film, is coming to your home cinema / living room. Images teased look amazing so start doodling those spirals.

DAN DA DAN
Streaming on Netflix from 3 October

Animation studio Science SARU is helming this anime adaption of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, streaming this October for anyone with a Netflix membership. Supernatural weirdness, UFOs, aliens, teen angst – what’s not to love?

Grave Torture
Streaming on Netflix now

Indonesian horror maestro Joko Anwar’s latest is now streaming on Netflix. Anwar has a preference for bold, blood-curdling and brutal, and this one’s no exception. A young woman is tormented by supernatural horrors after her parents die, but refuses to believe in ghosts. Think again.

Grotesquerie
Streaming on Disney+ from 23 October

Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) is on a roll: his true crime series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is getting viewers revved up on Netflix, and his horror drama series Grotesquerie is coming to Disney+ soon. If the story – a small town is haunted by a series of horrible murders, prompting a local detective and a Catholic nun to investigate the nature of good and evil – sounds a tad familiar, you know Murphy will turn it into something unique.

Lots to see, but that’s not all. You can also still check out film noir classic The Third Man in cinemas now, as well als Tim Burton’s hugely popular Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Animation The Wild Robot, action movie Canary Black and horror sequel Smile 2 will also be out soon.

See you on our opening night on 24 October!
