Blue Velvet

David Lynch’s breakthrough has become a classic, dark and witty at the same time.

After the death of his father, Jeffrey Beaumont works at the local hardware store. One day he finds a cut-off ear on his way home, which he brings to a friendly detective. Curious about the circumstances of the crime, he starts to investigate.

After the biopic The Elephant Man and the much maligned Dune, David Lynch delivered the true sequel to Eraserhead with Blue Velvet. Dark, but not without humour, and featuring some characters that have become iconic over the years, like nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens and psychopath Frank Booth. The film was the definitive breakthrough for David Lynch and actor Kyle MacLachlan, paving the way for their collaboration on Twin Peaks. But Blue Velvet is more than just the sum of its parts. It’s a film that blends sweet with sour, bourgeois with dangerous, and manages to balance those two parts perfectly.
