Chinese sci-fi keeps a perfect balance between personal story and large scale disaster of the earth dying after the sun has disappeared.
In the near future, the sun has disappeared and the earth is destined to die. In the eternal dark, chaos breaks out with looting and killings common. Young astronomer Sun Yang and his neighbour Chen Mu flee to a safe haven. Before they reach their destination, their tenacity will be tested to the limit. Chinese sci-fi keeps a perfect balance between personal story and large scale disaster.
This Chinese entry in the end-of-the-world genre uses its modest means quite cleverly by concentrating on the developing relationship between two survivors. Although from the outset it’s clear where the relationship is heading for, both leads are likable and moving.
Following them, we get a clear overview what’s waiting for us: from corporate greed to looting and violence. Between all the gloom, director Wen Ren keeps showing touches of light: people who remain helpful, even in the hardest times. The attention to detail and the nuanced picture of a post-apocalyptic world make Last Sunrise a gripping take on our dying civilization.
