Ride Your Wave

A young surfer is saved by an older fireman in a love story that’s as magical as it is heart-wrenching.

First-year student Hinako picked a college by the sea, so she could do a lot of surfing in her spare time. Her life changes when she is rescued from a burning house by the slightly older fireman Minato. Despite the age difference, something beautiful starts to blossom between the two and nothing seems to stand in the way of their happiness. Until fate intervenes, in a love story that’s as magical as it is heart-wrenching.

For a long time, anime director Masaaki Yuasa was known for his slightly weird films that pushed the boundaries of imagination. With Ride Your Wave he has made his most conventional film to date, essentially a love story with a hint of magic. As a viewer, you quickly start to suspect that the budding romance will be overshadowed by tragedy, but the richness of the story and its characters make the film anything but predictable. As always, Yuasa’s eye for humorous supporting characters keeps the story light. But that doesn’t mean you won’t come out of this movie with a lump in your throat.
