What Mad Max did in the desert, Kevin Costner does at sea in this quarter-century-old post-apocalyptic cult classic: surviving and kicking ass.
After melting polar ice caps have flooded the world, a nameless mariner roams the oceans by himself. His world is turned upside down when he has to escape a gang of pirates along with a woman and her small daughter. What Mad Max did in the desert, Kevin Costner does at sea in this quarter-of-a-century-old post-apocalyptic cult classic: surviving and kicking ass.
In 1995, with a 175 million dollar budget, Waterworld was the most expensive film ever made. Costner’s ecological disaster movie was in danger of becoming a disaster in itself when the waves swallowed up shooting locations and the star-slash-producer fell out with director Kevin Reynolds in the editing room, the latter being promptly dismissed. Waterloo was just one of the mocking nicknames used for the film. Nowadays the water spectacle, from the action scenes to the old school special effects to the exuberant production design, is still a great watch. And Dennis Hopper, playing the one-eyed pirate chief, has rarely chewed the scenery more amusingly than in this film.
